Sabah Tour operators told to advise their guests that State is safe
Tour operators have been told to advise their guests that the State is safe to visit as the state security has been tightened. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry is permanent secretary Datuk Michael Emban said foreign visitors need not worry about their safety.
Speaking to reporters after chairing a special working team on tourism here yesterday, he said the government has placed the necessary security blanket to ensure that Sabah is safe. “We cannot deny that there has been a drop in tourist arrivals but those who intend to come over to visit Sabah can be assured that they will be safe,” he said.
He added that the ground zero was far from areas offering various tourist attractions. Michael urged industry players to step up their promotions while the government is embarking on its own programmes to attract visitors to Sabah. Meanwhile, Sandakan Tour Operators Association chairman Datuk John Lim said the operators would continue with its efforts to promote tourism in Sandakan.
According to him, the members would inform their potential guests that the affected area is some 300km from Sandakan. “We are seeing normalcy in the daily lives of those affected,” he said. Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan general manager Syntio Camilleri said that visitors to the district are free to walk around without worrying about their safety.
